Access Links for Jellyfin

For Jellyfin: every web address of your server in one place, local and external, HTTPS only, with QR codes and certificate and page checks.

Every web address of the server, local and external, HTTPS only: the certificate and the external address are checked against this server1 of 6

Your users reach the server in many ways: Jellyfin Web, the sign-in screen, the address typed into a TV app, and the pages of the MediaLab plugins (Quick Connect, Registration, Cashier, Share Links…). Each of them has a local address, for your home network, and an external one, for anywhere else, often on a different port. Access Links by MediaLab lists all of them for the administrator, ready to copy, open or show as a QR code, and checks that they really work.

What it does

  • Every web entry point of the server: Jellyfin Web, the sign-in screen, the page where a signed-in user enters a Jellyfin Quick Connect code, the admin dashboard, the server address for apps, and the pages of the MediaLab plugins installed on the server: Quick Connect, Registration, Cashier, Share Links and Headend. Each page is marked by who it is for: everyone, signed-in users, TVs or administrators.
  • Local and external, side by side: the local address is found automatically (the server's network IP, local HTTPS port and base URL), or you type a name from your network such as media.lan. The external address is the one you type in a browser outside your home, with its own port (for example https://example.com:2096), so it works when the external SSL port differs from the local one (custom port mapping, reverse proxy). An https:// address from Jellyfin's Published server URIs is offered as a suggestion.
  • HTTPS only: http:// addresses are refused; if HTTPS is not enabled on the server, the page says so.
  • Copy, open or QR code for every link. The QR code is generated on your server, so internal addresses never go to an outside service.
  • Checks, on demand: the certificate of the local and external address (expired, expiring within 14 days, not covering the name, not trusted), whether the external address really reaches this server, and whether each page answers.
  • Other Jellyfin and Emby servers: add up to 50 other servers to keep their links at hand (web app, sign-in, MediaLab plugin pages); Check shows their name, version, real type and which pages exist.
  • In English and Romanian. Works on Jellyfin and on medialab Server.

What it sends where

  • Nothing leaves your server on its own. Opening the page only checks the certificate of the local address, on your own network. The other checks run only when the administrator clicks Check all links or Check: the server then connects to the addresses you entered (yours and those of the other servers you added) to read their certificate, their public server information (/System/Info/Public) and whether each page answers. Nothing secret is sent in these checks.
  • QR codes are generated on your server.
  • The only connection to medialab.works is the license check.

Client compatibility

  • Access Links is an admin page: checked end to end in Jellyfin Web and medialab Server, also on a 360 px phone screen. The links it makes are ordinary web addresses that open in any browser.
  • Not tested yet on a real public domain or with hairpin NAT: the external check starts from the server itself (see Limits).

Requirements

  • Jellyfin Server 12.2 or newer.
  • HTTPS enabled in Jellyfin (in its network settings, with a certificate), for the links to open.

Limits

  • Only pages of MediaLab plugins installed and active on the server are listed; plugins without pages for users (for example Smart Skip or Plan Guard) do not appear.
  • If your router has no "hairpin NAT", the check of the external address from the server itself can fail although the address works from outside: check it from a phone on mobile data.

Licensing

The plugin is open source (GPL-3.0). The ready-to-install builds are public, like the source code. What you buy is the subscription: the license to use the plugin on one Jellyfin server, the updates your plan includes, and support: every update while the subscription is active, through your private plugin repository, and help when something does not work. The plugin checks the subscription key once a day; without a valid subscription it stops until you renew (nothing is deleted). Monthly, yearly or lifetime (lifetime includes one year of updates), or included in the Jellyfin bundle. 30-day free trial.

Source code. For every release, the complete corresponding source code is public, next to the build, in the changelog, and also in your account (Account → Licenses, Source code); each archive contains the full GPL-3.0 text (LICENSE). If you need the source of a version you can no longer download, ask us and we send it. See section 10 of the EULA.

Access Links is our own code, written from scratch by MediaLab Works. Third-party code: the QR code generator is based on the QR Code generator library by Project Nayuki (MIT license).

Works best with medialab Server

This plugin works on official Jellyfin 12.2 or newer. On medialab Server, our Jellyfin-based server with the same data, libraries, users and apps, it works better:

  • Verified – medialab. The server checks the signature of our plugins and shows you that the files are exactly the ones we published. A plugin changed after publishing is flagged.
  • Built into the interface. Plugins can add buttons and links to your users' menu (for example "TV", "Share") with no manual web configuration.
  • Priority by default. medialab plugins come first where it matters: Live TV tuners, guide sources and subtitle providers. The order stays yours: you can change it at any time.
  • The medialab.works catalog included, installing without extra confirmations.
  • Updates from the web UI, no terminal (with Self-Update by MediaLab): check, update and roll back from the dashboard; if a new version fails to start, the server rolls back on its own with your data intact.
  • The same Jellyfin, up to date. medialab Server follows the stable Jellyfin 12.x releases every week; a new version is published only after it passes every test, including the tests of our plugins.

Jellyfin apps (Android, iOS, TV, web) connect exactly as they do to official Jellyfin.

To install it, run the container image (guide) or, on Debian 12, the apt packages, which replace jellyfin-server and jellyfin-web and keep your data in place (guide).

medialab Server is free software (GPL-2.0), based on Jellyfin. The source code is public: medialab-server and medialab-server-web.

Requirements

  • Jellyfin Server 12.2 or newer (Linux, Windows or Docker)
  • HTTPS enabled in Jellyfin (Dashboard → Networking, with a certificate) for the links to open
  • Open source (GPL-3.0): the source code of each version is in your account
