A companion service that runs next to Plex Media Server, with its own web interface (port 8124) where the MediaLab modules run and update themselves.
Plex no longer supports server plugins, so MediaLab for Plex runs as its own service next to Plex Media Server. It has its own web interface, is installed once with install.sh (systemd), as a Windows service (install-service.ps1) or in Docker, and it checks the license and updates itself. The MediaLab modules for Plex (Registration, Cashier) are its add-ons, started by the license.
What it does
- Runs next to Plex Media Server as its own service, not as a Plex plugin.
- Its own web interface on port 8124; on first start it prints a setup code you enter once, then you sign in with the Plex account that owns the server.
- Installs on Linux (systemd), Windows (service) or Docker (amd64/arm64).
- Checks the license and updates itself from medialab.works; new versions are verified by their ECDSA signature before being applied.
- The home of the MediaLab modules for Plex: they are installed, started and updated by the service.
- Free: no price and no separate subscription; it uses the license key of your Plex server.
Requirements
- A Plex Media Server (the service runs next to it — it is not a Plex plugin).
- Linux with systemd or Windows (service), or Docker on amd64/arm64.
- The server must reach
medialab.worksover HTTPS for the license check and updates. - Plex is a trademark of Plex, Inc.; MediaLab for Plex is not affiliated with Plex.
Licensing
MediaLab for Plex is free and granted to any usable Plex key, including the trial. The modules for Plex are licensed separately, like the Emby plugins. See the installation and use guide.
