Smart Skip for Emby

For Emby: detects intros, recaps ("Previously on…") and end credits in series and movies, for the Skip button and the next episode.

Smart Skip overview: how many titles were analyzed and how many have an intro, a recap or end credits, with analysis on demand1 of 6

Smart Skip finds the intro, the recap ("Previously on…") and the end credits of your series and movies by itself, so viewers can skip them and get the next episode as soon as the credits start. It works on your server only, with Emby's own tools.

What it does

  • Intros, detected per season from audio fingerprints, including episodes with a scene before the opening titles (cold opens).
  • Recaps ("Previously on…").
  • End credits for episodes and movies. Movie epilogues are protected, and the next episode is offered when the credits start.
  • Admin page: the confidence for each title, a "to review" list, and an editor that shows the exact frames at each boundary. Manual corrections are never overwritten by the analysis.
  • Automatic for new episodes, plus a nightly task.
  • In Emby: native intro and credits markers, without overwriting an intro already found by Emby Premiere, plus optional "Skip recap" and "Skip credits" buttons in Emby Web.

Limits

  • "Next time on" previews are not detected.
  • Recaps that were re-edited (remixed) are detected only sometimes: Smart Skip prefers marking nothing to marking the wrong part.
  • With recap detection on, analyzing a new season takes about twice as long. Recap detection can be turned off.
  • The "Skip recap" and "Skip credits" buttons appear in Emby Web only; the Emby apps use the native intro and credits markers.

Requirements

  • Emby Server 4.10.1 or newer.
  • Nothing else: Smart Skip uses your server's own ffmpeg (chromaprint, signalstats) and no graphics card.

What it sends where

  • Analysis is fully local, with the server's ffmpeg (chromaprint audio fingerprints, black-frame, silence and signal detection); no online intro databases are used.
  • The plugin's own buttons ("Skip recap", "Skip credits") need the optional dashboard-ui/index.html patch (off by default). If you enabled it and it can't be restored after an Emby update, the plugin log is sent to medialab.works (once per Emby version) only if automatic log sending is on, as in every plugin. The injected script only calls /SmartSkip/Segments/{id} on your server.
  • Plus the licensing client, the same in every plugin: see Licensing and privacy in our plugins.

Stored locally: state/results.json (segments and confidence), state/fp/<id>.bin (audio fingerprints); markers in the server's chapter database (and the original copy index.html.before-smartskip if the patch is on).

Client compatibility

  • Native markers (intro start/end, credits start, for episodes): used by Emby apps. From public documentation (not tested by us): the credits / "up next" marker is used in every Emby app except Roku and Apple TV; Infuse reads Emby credits (8.1.9+); the "Skip Intro" button without Emby Premiere is limited. An intro found by Emby Premiere is not overwritten (default).
  • The plugin's own buttons (recap, credits, also for movies): Emby Web only, with the optional index.html patch (✅ 7/7 titles, Chrome).
  • TV/mobile apps: ❔ the real-device matrix is not tested yet.

Legend: ✅ verified (end-to-end or on-device test) · 🟢 server-side, works with any client (by design, no client-specific test) · ➖ not applicable · ❔ not tested.

Licensing

One license per Emby server. Monthly, yearly or lifetime, or included in the Emby bundle. Free 30-day trial. The plugin is licensed under our EULA.

Smart Skip is our own code, written from scratch by MediaLab Works; it contains no third-party code.

Requirements

  • Emby Server 4.10.1 or newer
  • Nothing else: it uses the server's own ffmpeg (chromaprint, signalstats), no GPU
