Sign-up — Nextcloud user registration app
Sign-up (signup) is a user registration app for Nextcloud: it adds a self-registration page to your Nextcloud, linked from the sign-in screen ("Create an account"). Visitors enter their e-mail address, the personal data you ask for and a password of their choice, accept your terms, and get their account — after confirming the address, after an administrator approves it, or right away: you decide.
What it does
- E-mail confirmation (optional, on by default): a six-digit code, a link, or both. No account exists before the address is confirmed; unconfirmed registrations expire on their own (24 hours by default) and are removed with their data.
- Administrator approval (optional): new free accounts wait, disabled, in a list with Approve and Reject. Administrators get a Nextcloud notification and an e-mail; the visitor gets an e-mail with the decision (and your reason, if you give one).
- Your form: first and last name, phone, company, address, city, postal code, country — each not asked, optional or required — plus your own fields (text, long text, phone, date, list, tick box) with English and Romanian labels.
- New accounts: storage quota and groups you choose, login name from the e-mail address, from the name or chosen by the visitor, a welcome e-mail with your own text, and the visitor is signed in automatically. The password follows your Nextcloud password policy.
- Anti-abuse: rate limits and brute-force protection, a hidden field that only bots fill in, a minimum time to fill in the form, a daily limit per network address, allowed and blocked e-mail domains, and temporary (disposable) addresses blocked — a built-in list plus a list MediaLab Works keeps up to date. A captcha app can plug into the form.
- Privacy: an address that already has an account gets an e-mail instead of a code, so the page never reveals who is registered. The password is kept only encrypted until the account exists. Users see what they entered under Personal info → Registration details.
- English and Romanian for visitors, users and administrators.
Paid plans with Cashier
Install Cashier (1.2 or newer) and Sign-up detects it automatically: the registration page offers your plans next to the free account (or instead of it — your choice). The visitor picks a plan, fills in the form, confirms the address and pays with Stripe; the account is created and activated automatically as soon as the payment is confirmed, with the plan's storage and groups, and the visitor is signed in. Without Cashier, Sign-up offers free registration only.
When a monthly invoice is not paid, the account is suspended after Cashier's grace period (which can be 0 days): nobody can sign in, but files and data stay exactly as they are. Paying the invoice restores the account immediately. The user is e-mailed when an invoice is issued, when a payment fails, when the account is suspended (with a link to pay), when the invoice is paid and when the account is active again. Accounts are never deleted for an unpaid invoice — only an administrator deletes accounts.
Frequently asked
How can users register themselves on my Nextcloud? Install Sign-up: the sign-in page gets a Create an account link to the registration form. You choose whether the e-mail address must be confirmed, whether an administrator approves new accounts, which fields the form asks for, and the quota and groups of new accounts. See the guide.
Can I charge for accounts? Yes, with Cashier 1.2 or newer: the visitor picks a plan and pays with Stripe, and the account is created and activated as soon as the payment is confirmed.
How does it keep out spam registrations? Rate limits and brute-force protection, a hidden field that only bots fill in, a minimum time to fill in the form, a daily limit per network address, allowed and blocked e-mail domains, and blocked temporary addresses.
Requirements
- Nextcloud 30 to 34, PHP 8.1+, background jobs (Cron recommended) and a working e-mail configuration.
- For paid plans: Cashier 1.2 or newer (MediaLab Works) with a Stripe account.
Licensing
One license per Nextcloud instance: monthly, yearly or lifetime, or included in the Nextcloud bundle. 30-day free trial. Without a valid license the registration page shows "temporarily unavailable" and the link on the sign-in page is hidden; existing accounts are not affected and nothing is deleted.
