A recent post on r/jellyfin from a user who has just moved from Emby to Jellyfin raises a question plenty of self-hosters run into early on: what actually connects a Jellyfin library to Trakt?
According to the post, the user finished scanning their library and linked their Trakt account to their server through the Trakt website — the same approach they had used on a former Plex server — and then started the sync. Checking their Trakt progress, they could see that all of their media had been scanned. What they did not see was any change to the watched status of their shows and movies inside Jellyfin until they installed the Trakt plugin. That leaves them asking whether the plugin is still necessary.
The short answer, based on the experience described: yes, in this setup it was. Linking an account on the Trakt side and starting a sync there was not enough to update watched state in Jellyfin. The change in behavior only appeared once the plugin was installed. The post is a user report rather than official documentation, so treat it as a practical observation rather than a guarantee about every configuration.
Who does this affect? Mainly people migrating to Jellyfin from Emby or Plex who expect scrobbling and watched-status tracking to carry over with minimal effort. It also matters to anyone who runs a shared household server and relies on watched state to drive "next up" behavior and recommendations. If the watched flags do not follow the library, the viewing experience feels broken even when playback itself is fine.
Commentary for self-hosters
Two lessons are worth taking from this.
First, treat Trakt integration as two halves: the account-side link and the server-side component. A sync visible on the Trakt website tells you data is moving in that direction, but it does not by itself prove that Jellyfin is writing watched state back into your library. Verify both directions after setup rather than assuming.
Second, migrations are the moment to check your watched history carefully. Pick a couple of shows and a few movies you know you finished, confirm their status in Jellyfin, and only then consider the move complete. If you need to rebuild or adjust watched state later, doing it deliberately is far easier than discovering weeks of missing history.
If you are extending a Jellyfin setup with add-ons, our Jellyfin plugins are built for legal, self-hosted libraries. For the original thread and the community's replies, see the source below.
